What my Break Should Consist of
Self Portrait
91cm x 91cm
December 11, 2015
The self portrait of me conveys a soft meaning, to the days everyone wished to have. A day off , it can be interpreted as if [she] is having a spa day, or is in vacation spending time in the sauna. For me it represents me taking a bath. Since sometimes I just wish I could have a day to feel fresh and relax. I thought about this because of the stress I’m currently dealing with, final exams coming and all these essays due. Not just that, but how much I’m dreading for this to happen. It’s my first time painting on a huge canvas, well I consider it big. It was complicated, that it took me to work on it out of class, but so worth it. I’m very proud of it.

Process:
The steps I took to my final product were a mess , well I think. I was unsure of what to do, I had a week to finish, I had other work to finish. Thing was, I was progressing and planning but then I would get other ideas. I restarted like four times.
1. I went through my art history notebook , went through all the art movements. I liked Frida Kahlo's paintings and Pop Art again caught my attention. 2. I went through my pictures to find a selfie or at least a picture that can fit in the picture “Women in Bath” by Roy Lichtenstein. 3. Then I printed it on a transparent paper to put it on the projector and trace it on my canvas. 4. I started off by painting my hair and then went to outlining it with brow. Then did my face not including my eyes or lips. 5. Lastly I tried fixing all the spots that seemed off. Throughout my process I had accidents; when tracing it onto my canvas, someone bumped into my canvas, I couldn't find the previous position, so I had to restart over again. |

Inspiration:
Roy Lichstein, who I consider the King of the Pop Art Movement, had again caught my attention. After going through all his paintings, I decided on this one “Women In Bath”, I was also considering “Drowning girl” But this one had a more chill vibe. I’ve always like the Pop Art Movement, it’s so colorful, it includes movement and primary colors, yet it still looks fantastic. I really like this painting because , the way the hair was painted, it has white spots, but it's also made up deformed shapes. Another thing was how the sponge looks really realistic.

Reflection:
Since this was my first 91 by 91 cm art piece, my experience was full of " Is this right?". I got so used to small art pieces. Even though it was stressful, I was really hooked in finishing and making it look really good. One of the challenges I faced were:
- Straight edges or lines, I tired using tape but it didn't really help me. Or perhaps I wasn't using this technique right.
- FLESH TONE! This was what took most of my time. I looked up on Youtube on how to do your own flesh tone. I followed the rules, Once I started painting, the color seemed so dark. This happened for about three times.
- My eyes ; I wanted to make them look really cool. My lips and braces were also a bit tough.
