Exhibition Text:Money Baby
Multimedia 7.6cm x 16.1cm March 3, 2015 This art piece is of a foil doll, dressed with money. It has a personal meaning, as long with stories I've heard that deeply touched my heart. This doll is to reflect and have a different view for a person. Now a days, I question myself..... Do people live to work? Or do people work to live? That's the topic of my art piece.Money doesn't buy life, and you can't pay to go back. |
Meaning:
I once was told a story. My friend was saying how she was going to move. So I asked "where she was moving?" She told me she was moving in with another family, who had have know her since she was young. At first I was confused, then she explained to me. She recently had gotten adopted by a new family, since her parents were taking parental responsibility. Her parents would always fight, and it was about money. Apart from this, there are movies who picture a rich protagonists not getting physical love but instead they would get money. For this piece, I didn't want the viewer to FIND or THINK the meaning. I want people to know as soon as they see it. Since they thought it was related to abortion, child abuse, and teens with money.
Process:
Throughout my process, I faced multiple challenges. However apart from the difficulties , the process was very organized. I started by looking a doll , because I used to play with Barbie dolls, but I ended up finding the baby doll, which connected more to my idea. Then I wrapped the baby doll with aluminum foil. I wanted to add more color to the baby doll, so I added paint to emphasize her lips and eyes. Making her eyes blue and adding gold "eyeliner" to emphasize her eyes and make it shinier. Then leaving her lips red to give her the dramatic look. I wasn't going to leave my babies body naked , therefore I covered the baby with money paper. I didn't want to make this project simple, so I used Photoshop to make my own type of dollar bill. I also looked up lyrics of my favorite artist, and if the lyrics was some way connected to money I would add it to the dollar bill. The bill itself had many lyrics in different fonts and sizes. I also added an emoji, which is the happy happy emoji, with dollar signs eyes and tongue. Therefore I printed it and taped it to the baby , I added layer to make sure every spot was covered.

Inspiration:
I was inspired by the net, and found some really cool abstract artwork. I kind of just Google everything, and then from the research, I got my inspiration. However I wanted this to be fun to look at, so I got inspired from Post Modern Art and Pop art. I found this local artist, JungHwa Lee. Her website is full of creativity, it was really helpful too. They she used her colors, and the texture of her materials are so neat, her art is neat and rare. Which I loved and knew I wanted to do something like her art work. The picture of the cat on the left had an interesting shape and her way to mix things up inspired me to do that to my artwork. Her artwork is also sort of creepy which really inspired me and had me going for this artpiece. I've never had any "creepy" artwork other than 'Money Baby'. JungHwa's artwork is seen as scary and it definitely has the looks to qualify for "scary"

Reflection:
In the making of this art piece, it was surrounded by upcoming surprises. As in the process of working on the doll, new challenges popped in. The most difficult one for me was to think of what to do. Once again, I had no ideas, zero ideas. I looked up artists , but I wasn't really getting inspiration from them. Until I heard the story my friend shared with me. At first I also didn't know where I was going with this piece, however I love the outcome. It's way out of my zone , something new, and nothing related to my past artwork. Another thing I found stressing was using Photoshop. I had to look tutorials on how to use it correctly and get it right. Last challenge that had me restart multiple times was the making of the face, of foil, it would keep ripping. I then started to use the foil paper more sensitively.
