Como Una Flor
Industrial vs Organic 19.7cm x 22.3cm April 25, 2016 To begin with this art piece is suppose to imitate Frida Kahlo's art pieces. My art piece is not just suppose to symbolize her artwork but her pain expressed in her artwork. I'm using nails to symbolize industrial , the plants/leafs symbolize s organic. The nails being in the soil is suppose to symbolize the pain it's causing on the soil. |
Process:For my art piece, I bought all my materials at Michael's , such as wood box, nails , acrylic paints, and the plastic flowers. For the nails, I bought different types and sizes. For the nails I bought short and tall ones, with the top of it being a small or big circle. Before that I sketched three ideas that I had in mind. I found that making a flower out of nails to be different from what I seen on my surroundings. So after I I got my materials, I started with my flower. I made a design with the plain nails, then I added paint with the tip of another paint. I also tried making patterns with color, apart from which nail emphasized more. Finally I added the outside decorations, I cute the leaves off the plants I had bought and put it on the edge of the box, to get a more nature feeling. |
Inspiration:
Since the beginning I wanted to do an art piece that included plants or flowers like most of Frida Kahlos's art work. Throughout my high school years I learned so much about Kahlo, from Spanish class to English class. It was often said; not a surrealist not a symbolism and yet belongs to both. Her painting often dealt with subjects rarely treated in Western Art: childbirth, miscarriage, abortion and menstruation. An artistic movement that also influenced me was Symbolism, specifically the artist Henri Rousseau. He believed his fantastic, childlike landscapes full of strange, lurking animals, and tree sized flowers were realistic paintings in the academic style.

Reflection:
One of the things I could've improved in this art project was to use a more consistent soil so the nails could stand even if I move the box. Another thing I could have changed in my art piece was to use another way to have the nails stand better. I could've used hot glue to glue the nail to the soil, however I'm not sure that would've worked. Thirdly I could've used real leaves to decorate the surrounding of the wood box. However that wouldn't be 100% successful because plants (leaves) don't last forever and will soon die and rot, leading to making a bad smell.
