Cover Me
Both are 12in x 12in
Painting, Photoshop, Mixed Media
November 2,2016
Again, this project contains of two parts, this time I did two paintings. I see it as if it were a puzzle, the painting with a flowery design covers the head in the other painting. My message is: people try to change themselves, such as their mind, personality, opinions and views just to fit it. Society and past events shape us, but we also take control on what CAN change us and who we surround ourselves with. The meaning can get very personal and deep, so for the viewers who don't feel comfortable opening up, or thinking about topics like these. It can also be viewed differently, just change it. Instead of a flower make it into whatever you please!

Meaning:
High school is either the best four years of your life or the most challenging. That's what high school is about preparing yourself for college or the outside world. The way I see it; if it was rough, it definitely had a huge impact on your life. 'What doesn't kill you makes you stronger' , and you'll be stronger when you face barriers. If high school were the best years, then a positive mind will surround you and don't leave happiness aside. Back to fitting in-- I've met people who try to fit in and it makes me wonder, why? Fitting in isn't necessary, the world is huge and there are different types of people. Yeah you're stuck in high school being limited to types of people, but high school doesn't last long. It's only four years, after, you see what's out there and with no company. Anyways this leads to change, a person changes while they meet people. This can be confusing because change is either BECAUSE OF THEM or YOU. Which leads me to the title, don't change the real, don't hide or cover the real you for people. Embrace the real you and what comes with you. It's acceptable and there's not just one person who will not even risk to change you but multiple people.
Process:

I began with the message, I thought to myself why do people let other change them? I could answer this myself, because at one point I did let someone change my views. And that's okay, it's natural. These two paintings are dedicated to me, and to remind myself how that shouldn't happen again. RIGHT PAINTING: I began by drawing a flower, I included all the designs I could think of. I chose it to be symmetrical, with the lines, circles, triangles and dots. I limited myself to colors. I used yellow, green and blue and white, and make different colors from them. LEFT PAINTING: I first painted the back ground, from dark blue to light blue and at the bottom grey. Then I drew the body. At first I was thinking of drawing the man in the suit but since this painting was more personal. I thought of drawing myself , so I drew my body. Inspiration:
|
I was mainly inspired by The Son Of Man by Rene Magritte. The background of my painting is based on Magritte's painting. I painted the background using the same colors, blue, white and gray. Though I didn't paint or outline the background, because I didn't want it to be exactly the same. I also took her idea of having a man standing being covered by an object. In her case , it's a man in a suit and his face is covered by an apple. In my case it's me or a random women being covered by a rare flower.
The design of my flower came straight from me. Even though I know it has been used before. I also got ideas from a local artist in Milwaukee, Celeste Contreras. A little background of her: shes's currently studying at Alverno College, majoring to be a middle school art teacher. She also founded Dia de los Muertos project 2010- present. I was looking at her portfolio, and found these self portraits, each individual one don't have a title. Majority of her art piece, contains some sort of patters/design. In this case her face does. |

ACT Questions: |
Even though my art piece looks confident and makes sense, I feel like I could've improved in some things. For next time; I would like to shape my flower more. It almost doesn't look like a flower. It looks like a design or a pattern. There's no border that shows how it's a flower. Second, I think I took too long making this. I took about a month, when it should have taken half a month. Also, my piece (above to the left) the background could have been more clear. For next time I plan to make start with the background and make sure it looks good, as if there's no going back.

1. The relationship between my art piece and inspiration, would be the designs by Celeste Contreras. And for my setting/background or overall theme came from Rene Magritte.
2.I had two artistic inspirations, though I looked more into Celeste Contreras art pieces because it was aesthetically pleasing. And also, it provided a well combination of shapes and movement. 3. One thing I discovered, is that people find designs intriguing and prefer it. As well as color, bright colors always catch their attention, especially with movement. Because they wonder "How did they do that?" 4. Again, my my central idea was to deliver a message to my viewers, and if they don't see my point of view, it's fine. Another thing would be to have them think of what they would cover the face with. 5. I found out how popular Mexican culture is, when it comes to art. I didn't think it was that common. I enjoyed doing art about Peru, where I come from. So I thought I should go back to culture, but Peruvian culture. |
