Exhibition Text:
To end my highschool art journey, I decided to end just how I started. I started off with the mentality of designing clothes and all I could think of was how to reflect my fashion in art class. My dry point and block print was all about increasing my talent and ideas on fashion. This art piece is a combinatin of what I've learned and enjoyed art. Painting, my most enjoyable medium and fashion, my life long obsession. Which turns out into a mixed media. And once again, symbolizing a part of my life and lessons learned.
Inspiration:
Frida Kahlo won't stop impressing me , therefore she's one of my inspirations, again. For this art piece I focused on her way of dressing. When she was younger she was considered rebellious. Due to her fashion sense, she dressed in suits. Breaking the norms. In Mexico, women were expected to wear dresses, skirts, and be surrounded by jewelry. I gained most of the details from Frida Kahlos piece "Self Portrait with Neckalce of Thorns and Hummingbird". In Frida's piece , Frida has a necklace of thorns, which I decided to include in my piece. Details I gathered from all her self portraits were, flowers, she always incorporated either red or pink flowers. The flowers were either on top of her head or set as the background of her self portraits. For this art piece I looked more further into her self portraits and acknowledge what she wore. Aside from Frida Kahlo I looked into artists who were also inspired by her. Lena Hoschek 's Spring Summer Collection 2013, were mainly dresses. I saw that the tops part of her dresses were wide opened. It went from shoulder to shoulder, and the designs were printed of flower or a pattern. |
Process:
I began by sketching, I had an idea of where this art piece was going to end up at. I had the foundation, which was fashion. Whatever the medium, it had to be related to fashion. Therefore I drew three outifts, I thought of three different outfits. One including pants, skirt and a dress. Once done, I chose the more appealing one, which was the waist blouse and up to waist skinny jeans. I drew it on my canvas and painted the blouse. After I used of my sketches to be the design of the pants. I scanned and copied multiples, to make sure there's enough for the pants. After wards I did the skin tones and got done with all the painting. The design on the blouse and skin tone of the mannequin, and details such as the necklace of thorn . Lastly I did origami flowers, I did three different sizes and painted them . I chose specific colors, gold and burgundy. Gold because it adds formality, proffesionalism and a hint of clean. Burgandy is seen as a sexy color, and I was reaching for my mannequin to look slightly sexy. Meaning:
Fashion didn't catch my attention until I started middle school. I began to notice the way people dressed and how I dressed. From just viewing, I learned that people's fashion reflects who they are as a person. At that age I was also exposed to technology, I had just received an iPod and made social media accounts. I would see the way artists, models, actors dressed and it really inspired me to change the way I dressed. Which I don't regret, I did not only change, but I learned more about me. Back then, I didn't know how I should dress, or what was the current style. I wanted my last art piece to be the conclusion. Conclusions have to refer to the introduction, which I did. Looking back to my junior year art, I started off with a photo collage, dry point and block print. They all had something in common, fashion and outfit ideas. After those art pieces, I lost focus on fashion. Now I reminded myself about what my motivation was, fashion has always played a huge role in my daily life. This artpiece is to remind myself of where I came from, and not foget my past. Not only does it have a meaning to me, but it includes my favorite art techniques and medium. The color variation, medium (mixed media) , drawing outfits, Frida Kahlo and origami. |

Reflection:
For my next mixed media I can be more prepared if I plan with details and time frames. For this project I didn't rush since I trusted the time I had, which was a month. Once I was short on time, I rushed. Which made it difficult for my artpiece to turn out the way I planned it. Though, I tend to never plan because I'm constantly changing my mind when it comes to art. Overall I am pleased with my result, it' s similar to what I planned in my mind, thought even better. Perhaps it was less challenging because I used techniques I've practiced multiple times before. Also, painting was always my strength, aside from enjoying I felt like a pro at it. Origami isn't something I practice often, but had always been interested in it. The origami flowers can't definetely improve, they weren't as neat as I expected. Next time, I can purchase designed papers, instead of using white paper and then painting it.
